The ton rating of a truck can be identified by its model number. This system applies across all major American truck brands — Ford, Chevrolet/GMC, and Ram (Dodge).
½ ton Ford F-150 / Chevy Silverado 1500 / GMC Sierra 1500 / Ram 1500
¾ ton Ford F-250 / Chevy Silverado 2500 / GMC Sierra 2500 / Ram 2500
1 ton Ford F-350 / Chevy Silverado 3500 / GMC Sierra 3500 / Ram 3500
1½ ton Ford F-450
2 ton Ford F-550
2½ ton Ford F-650
How to read the number: For Ford, the last two digits of the model number correspond to the class (F-250 = ¾ ton). For Chevy, GMC, and Ram, divide the number by 1,000 (2500 ÷ 1000 = 2.5, then apply the same scale).
Important note: These are traditional classification names, not exact payload figures.
